Australia will acquire the AIM-260 Joint Advanced Tactical Missile through a US Foreign Military Sales agreement valued at almost A$736 million, becoming the weapon’s first operator outside the United States.
The Australian Department of Defence plans to integrate the long-range air-to-air missile first with the Royal Australian Air Force’s F/A-18F Super Hornet, followed by the F-35A Lightning II and EA-18G Growler fleets. The acquisition was announced during Exercise Pitch Black in Darwin.
That sequence places the Super Hornet at the front of Australia’s JATM introduction while extending the intended weapon set across combat, stealth, and electronic-attack aircraft. Defence has not disclosed delivery dates, missile quantities, or the detailed integration schedule, leaving the A$736 million figure to cover a package whose full configuration remains protected.
AIM-260 was developed in the United States as a new beyond-visual-range air-to-air weapon. Public technical information is limited, and the Australian announcement gives no range, seeker, propulsion, or datalink specifications. It describes the missile as high-speed and long-range, and positions it alongside existing air-to-air weapons and surface-based missile capabilities.
The weapon’s operational value will depend on more than its airframe and propulsion system. Radar detection, off-board sensing, target-quality tracks, secure datalinks, mission-computer software, electronic protection, and aircraft stores-management systems must operate together before a crew can employ it reliably at extended range.
Integration across three aircraft types creates separate engineering and certification workloads. The Super Hornet and Growler share parts of their airframe and systems heritage, but their missions differ, while the F-35A brings low-observable carriage, sensor fusion, software, and multinational configuration controls. A common missile does not remove the need to qualify interfaces, update operational flight programmes, conduct ground tests, and complete captive-carry and firing activity for each platform.
Pat Conroy, Australia’s Minister for Defence Industry, said: “JATM missiles are some of the most sophisticated air-to-air weapons in the world, and Australia will be the first country to operate them outside the US.”
Australia’s first-customer position also deepens the technical relationship behind the alliance. Foreign Military Sales procurement provides a government-to-government route for contracting, technical support, and security management, but operating a newly released US weapon will require close coordination over software baselines, test data, maintenance arrangements, and future modifications.
The acquisition forms part of Australia’s layered air and missile defence programme under the 2026 National Defence Strategy and Integrated Investment Program. That architecture spans sensors, command systems, aircraft, ground-based air defence, and strike capabilities. JATM adds an airborne long-range engagement option, but it still depends on the detection and command network needed to create and maintain a valid track.
The support burden will extend across all three fast-jet fleets. Missile storage, environmental control, transport, loading equipment, test sets, technical publications, and weapons training must be established alongside aircraft integration. Australia will need rounds for operational stocks, training, test firings, and sustainment, although the government has not divided the announced investment across those elements.
For the F/A-18F and EA-18G fleets, integration may provide an earlier route into service than the F-35A. The F-35’s multinational development and software governance can make weapon integration a broader programme decision, while Australia has more direct control over the configuration and test activity associated with its Boeing-built aircraft. The announced sequence reflects that practical difference without setting dates.
Electronic-attack integration adds another technical layer. The EA-18G’s mission depends on sensing and disrupting hostile emitters while sharing information with other aircraft, so a long-range missile must fit within a system already managing electronic-support data, jamming assignments, and tactical links. The government has not said whether Growler-specific employment concepts will be cleared at the initial stage or added later.
JATM will sit within a wider guided-weapons investment that Australia values at up to A$36 billion over the next decade. The government is also building domestic missile assembly and component capacity, but the AIM-260 acquisition is an imported US system rather than a stated Australian manufacturing programme. Its local industrial effect will depend on whether sustainment, test, storage, or future component work is placed in Australia.
The procurement establishes Australia as the first export customer, but aircraft-specific milestones will decide when the capability becomes usable. Contract signature, missile delivery, software release, ground integration, flight testing, and operational clearance must all be completed before the AIM-260 enters routine RAAF service.
