Taiwan signs NT.9bn ALTIUS drone contract

Taiwan has signed a NT$26.9bn contract for ALTIUS unmanned systems. The acquisition covers 2,032 reconnaissance aircraft and loitering munitions, with deliveries scheduled from the fourth quarter of 2026 through June 2033.

Taiwan has formalised a NT$26.9 billion procurement covering 2,032 ALTIUS unmanned systems, setting a multi-year delivery programme for reconnaissance aircraft, loitering munitions, launch equipment, and associated support.

The order comprises 1,554 ALTIUS-700M loitering munitions and 478 ALTIUS-600ISR reconnaissance aircraft. Initial deliveries are scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2026, with the programme running through June 2033.

The aircraft are manufactured by Anduril Industries, whose ALTIUS family is built around a modular launched-effects architecture. Taiwan is therefore buying two related aircraft types for different parts of the mission chain rather than treating reconnaissance and strike as unrelated procurements.

ALTIUS-700M provides the kinetic element, while the 600ISR is intended for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance. Using aircraft from the same broader family can simplify parts of the training, launch, software, and support architecture, although each variant still brings its own payload, mission, and acceptance requirements.

The contract follows earlier Taiwanese planning for the two types and converts that requirement into a defined quantity and delivery schedule. A procurement of more than 2,000 aircraft creates a different industrial problem from a demonstration or limited operational purchase because manufacturing cadence, configuration control, test capacity, spares, and through-life support have to be sustained across successive production lots.

The quantities had already appeared in Taiwan’s wider defence-resilience planning before the contract was signed. Earlier Ministry of National Defense material listed 1,554 ALTIUS-700M systems and 478 ALTIUS-600ISR aircraft among planned acquisitions, alongside additional artillery, missiles, air defence, and domestically produced uncrewed systems. The 27 August contract fixes the commercial step for a requirement that had already been defined at force-planning level.

Anduril has already expanded ALTIUS manufacturing capacity in the United States. The company has disclosed more than $60 million of investment in a 180,000-square-foot facility in Atlanta, Georgia, intended to increase production of the family after deliveries to US government customers. Taiwan’s order adds a long-duration allied requirement measured in thousands of systems.

That scale places pressure on more than final assembly. Airframes, propulsion, electronics, sensors, communications hardware, mission computers, launch equipment, and energetic payloads have to arrive in controlled configurations, while software revisions must remain compatible with aircraft delivered at different points in the programme.

The seven-year delivery span makes configuration management particularly significant. Uncrewed systems can change quickly as sensors, autonomy software, datalinks, navigation methods, and countermeasure requirements evolve, but a fleet assembled over several years still needs a support baseline that allows operators to train, maintain, update, and deploy the equipment without creating an unsustainable number of variants.

The procurement also links reconnaissance and strike more closely at unit level. The 600ISR can contribute to detecting and observing targets, while the 700M provides a loitering munition within the same broad product family. Operational performance will depend on how effectively those functions are connected through communications, targeting data, mission planning, and command arrangements rather than on the air vehicles in isolation.

Acceptance will be as important as delivery. Large quantities do not translate automatically into deployable capacity if launch systems, software, communications, operator training, maintenance equipment, and spares arrive on different schedules or fail to meet integration requirements.

Taiwan has also been expanding its wider uncrewed-systems inventory while seeking greater domestic production capacity. The ALTIUS purchase sits within that broader programme, but it remains a US-manufactured acquisition with its own export, production, and support chain, leaving delivery performance partly dependent on Anduril’s ability to scale output alongside other customer commitments.

The industrial challenge is compounded by the nature of expendable systems. A loitering-munition fleet is not maintained solely as a fixed peacetime inventory; training consumption, shelf-life management, software updates, battery condition, storage, and replacement demand all affect the quantity that remains operationally available.

Reconnaissance aircraft impose a different support pattern because they are intended to return and fly repeatedly. Taiwan therefore has two logistics models within one acquisition: consumable strike systems whose stocks have to be replenished, and reusable ISR aircraft whose availability depends on maintenance, repair, and component support.

The first production test comes quickly. Deliveries are due to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026, leaving the programme to demonstrate whether contracted quantities, support equipment, training, and acceptance can be aligned from the opening batch rather than corrected after the fleet has already begun to grow.
