RENK has launched the ESM 280, a new military transmission for medium and heavy wheeled armoured vehicles.

The launch marks RENK’s entry into the wheeled armoured vehicle market, extending the company’s military drivetrain work beyond tracked platforms. The ESM 280 is designed for vehicles up to 620kW and uses a range pack derived from the ESM 350.

RENK developed the system for sustained performance under heavy loads, long service life, and independence from civilian technology cycles. The transmission will be formally presented at Eurosatory 2026 in Paris.

The company has positioned the ESM 280 as a purpose-built military transmission rather than a civilian drivetrain adapted for defence use. The system is intended for long-lifecycle vehicle programmes where maintainability, ruggedness, and future support carry the same weight as initial performance.

Mobility systems and programme risk

Wheeled armoured vehicles are becoming heavier as customers add protection, larger turrets, more sensors, electronic warfare equipment, and active protection systems. Those additions increase pressure on drivetrains, cooling systems, suspension, brakes, and vehicle power management.

Transmission choice affects more than mobility. It influences acceleration, terrain handling, fuel efficiency, maintenance intervals, reliability, upgrade headroom, and recovery planning. A drivetrain that reaches its limits early can restrict future vehicle growth.

The ESM 280 is aimed at vehicle builders seeking a military-grade mobility package for long-term programmes. Its compact design is intended to support integration into existing platforms without major structural changes, a significant factor for primes managing hull layouts, crew space, powertrain access, and protection envelopes.

Wheeled vehicle demand

Demand for 4×4, 6×6, and 8×8 armoured vehicles remains active across Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. Many armies are replacing older fleets or upgrading platforms to carry heavier mission equipment and operate across more demanding threat environments.

That demand creates a sizeable supply opportunity for drivetrain specialists. Wheeled armoured vehicle production depends on reliable transmission supply, long-term spares availability, and clear documentation for international support chains.

RENK’s move into the sector gives platform manufacturers another option for programmes where civilian-derived drivetrains may lack the required lifecycle margin. The ESM 280 also broadens RENK’s position across the military mobility market before the next major wave of armoured vehicle procurements and upgrades.
