Diehl Defence and BAE Systems have signed a memorandum of understanding covering the integration of Diehl’s 127 mm ammunition family with the Mk 45 naval gun. The companies will also assess the potential compatibility of IRIS-T guided missiles with launching systems in BAE Systems’ portfolio.
The initial work centres on the Mk 45 Mod 4, a 5-inch naval gun being positioned for German and international requirements. Diehl intends to pair the weapon with its high-precision, long-range 127 mm ammunition, while both companies examine the technical interfaces and qualification activity needed to offer the combination to customers.
The memorandum is an integration agreement rather than a procurement contract. Neither company has named a launch customer, disclosed a programme value, identified a ship class, or provided a timetable for firing trials. Its immediate significance lies in bringing a gun supplier and an ammunition and missile manufacturer into a structured technical relationship before a customer selects the proposed configuration.
Naval ammunition compatibility is not determined by calibre alone. A round must work with the gun’s chamber, barrel, loading system, handling equipment, fuzing arrangements, fire-control calculations, safety rules, and shipboard storage conditions. Long-range or precision ammunition adds further requirements involving guidance, mission planning, target data, and software interfaces.
The Mk 45 Mod 4 provides a defined weapon around which those interfaces can be examined. The partners will need to establish permissible ammunition configurations, ballistic data, operating limits, safety evidence, and proof requirements before the proposed combination can be considered ready for service.
Live firing would be necessary if the collaboration progresses into a qualified system. Tests would need to confirm safe operation, accuracy, consistency, gun wear, ammunition handling, and compatibility with the fire-control equipment used aboard the selected ship.
For Diehl, integration with an established naval gun creates a route into fleets that use or are considering the Mk 45 family. For BAE Systems, an additional European ammunition option could broaden the weapon’s available effects and strengthen its position where local industrial participation, sovereign supply, or national ammunition policy affects procurement.
The German market is identified explicitly, although the companies are also targeting international customers. Export configuration control will therefore be central to the work. Guidance components, energetic materials, software, launcher technology, and technical data may be subject to separate national approvals.
Customers could also require local assembly, stockpile support, domestic maintenance, or access to test evidence. The integration programme must be sufficiently controlled to support those variations without allowing the technical baseline to fragment between users.
The second strand of the memorandum is less defined. Diehl and BAE Systems will examine potential integration of the IRIS-T missile family with BAE Systems launchers, but the announcement does not identify a particular missile variant, launching system, ship class, or operational requirement.
That wording gives the companies room to assess several architectures, but it should not be interpreted as confirmation that a missile-launcher pairing has already been selected. Missile integration can require mechanical adaptation, electrical power, cooling, canister interfaces, launch sequencing, command links, target-quality data, safety certification, and engagement testing.
A launcher may be physically capable of accepting a weapon while the wider combat system remains unable to plan, authorise, and execute an engagement. Radar and other sensors must generate suitable tracks, command software must understand the missile’s performance, and the ship must communicate with the weapon throughout the required engagement sequence.
The agreement therefore combines two related but separate naval weapons activities. The 127 mm programme concerns gun and ammunition compatibility, while the IRIS-T study concerns missile, launcher, and combat-system integration. Each will require its own technical baseline, qualification evidence, and customer decision.
Industrial participation is part of the commercial positioning. BAE Systems has linked the agreement to German defence capability and local economic activity, while Diehl brings a domestic production base and established guided-weapons portfolio.
A combined offer may be attractive where a navy wants an internationally supported gun but also expects German technology, ammunition supply, and through-life support. That proposition will still be tested against reliability, accuracy, magazine arrangements, barrel wear, storage life, export controls, and the cost of maintaining multiple ammunition types.
The memorandum provides a basis for technical work without claiming that either integration is already available. The next credible milestones would include a defined configuration, a named customer requirement, ground integration, firing trials, and qualification.
Until those steps occur, the partnership remains an attempt to align established product portfolios around future German and export opportunities. The engineering programme must now determine whether the commercial fit can be converted into weapons combinations that are safe, supportable, and ready for fleet use.
