John F. Kennedy has departed Newport News Shipbuilding for US Navy acceptance trials, moving the second Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carrier into another major test phase before delivery. The 12 August departure follows builder’s trials earlier this year and places the integrated ship back at sea for Navy evaluation of important systems and components.
HII is constructing the carrier at its Newport News Shipbuilding division in Virginia. The company said acceptance trials would test and evaluate significant ship systems and components, with shipbuilders, the ship’s force, suppliers, and Navy personnel contributing to the programme.
The latest underway period follows John F. Kennedy’s first trip to sea for builder’s trials in January. The carrier spent eight days conducting systems, equipment, and operational testing before returning to Newport News in early February. Builder’s trials principally allow the shipbuilder and programme team to identify problems and demonstrate the vessel before the government’s formal acceptance process advances.
Acceptance trials apply a different level of scrutiny because they are tied directly to whether the ship meets the Navy’s requirements ahead of delivery. A nuclear-powered aircraft carrier contains thousands of mechanical, electrical, aviation, combat-system, and support functions that have been installed and tested individually before they are expected to perform as one integrated ship.
That integrated stage has been particularly important for CVN 79 because the Ford class introduced substantial changes from the Nimitz-class design. John F. Kennedy incorporates the class’s revised nuclear power and electrical architecture, Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System, Advanced Arresting Gear, and Advanced Weapons Elevators, alongside wider changes to aircraft handling and ship systems.
Several of those technologies have influenced the programme schedule. Advanced Arresting Gear testing and completion of the Advanced Weapons Elevators were among the issues associated with earlier delivery delays. USNI News reported on 12 August that the Navy had recently informed Congress that seven of John F. Kennedy’s 11 weapons elevators had completed construction.
The elevators move weapons between magazines deep inside the carrier and the flight deck, making dimensional tolerances, control systems, reliability, and safe handling integral to flight operations. Seven completed units are reportedly sufficient to provide crew access to all weapons magazines for continued training and certification, but remaining construction still forms part of the wider completion programme.
John F. Kennedy has also incorporated equipment changes during construction rather than receiving them through an early post-delivery availability. The programme has included modifications associated with operating the F-35C and installation of the Enterprise Air Surveillance Radar, increasing work within the shipbuilding phase while aiming to deliver a more complete combat configuration.
Those changes illustrate one of the difficulties in constructing a second ship in a new carrier class. A follow-on hull is expected to benefit from lessons learned on the first vessel, but it is also built while the Navy is still refining equipment, operational requirements, and installation practices introduced with the lead ship. Production learning and configuration change can therefore occur simultaneously rather than sequentially.
The industrial consequences spread through a supply chain considerably larger than the Newport News yard itself. Carrier construction depends on specialised steel, electrical equipment, machinery, piping, nuclear components, aviation systems, sensors, and thousands of other manufactured items. Problems exposed during integrated testing may originate in design, production, installation, software, or configuration control long before the ship leaves the pier.
Acceptance trials compress much of that accumulated work into an at-sea assessment. Individual discrepancies can range from relatively routine corrections to issues affecting certification or delivery, so simply completing the underway period is not the final measure. The condition of the ship on return, the outstanding trial items, and the time required to close them will determine how much programme risk remains.
The second carrier is also feeding production knowledge into later Ford-class ships already under construction at Newport News. Enterprise and Doris Miller will draw on experience from the preceding hulls, particularly where installation sequencing, digital work instructions, supplier performance, and testing can be standardised rather than rediscovered from ship to ship.
John F. Kennedy remains a pre-commissioning unit, and acceptance trials do not place the carrier into operational service. Delivery will still be followed by further Navy activity, crew preparation, certification, and the progression towards commissioning and eventual deployment.
The significance of the 12 August departure is more immediate. After years in which CVN 79’s schedule has been shaped by design changes and incomplete equipment, the programme is again being measured through integrated performance at sea. Acceptance trials will show how much of the remaining work is routine ship completion and how much still has the potential to influence the delivery timetable.
