Supacat expands Devon vehicle production capacity

Supacat has opened expanded production capacity at its Devon headquarters. The Jones II Building strengthens the British vehicle maker’s manufacturing base as Jackal 3 work and other tactical mobility programmes continue.

Supacat has opened a new production facility at its headquarters near Honiton in Devon, expanding the British military vehicle manufacturer’s capacity while current tactical mobility programmes move through production.

The building has been named Jones II in honour of company co-founder Nick Jones and was formally opened by Major General Chris King. Supacat says the expansion will support work for the British Army and international customers while giving the company more room to manufacture and develop tactical vehicles.

The company has not disclosed the size or construction cost of the building, nor tied it publicly to one production line. That makes the opening a capacity milestone rather than a programme award, although it arrives during renewed production of the High Mobility Transporter family for the UK Ministry of Defence.

The clearest current reference point is Jackal 3. Supacat and Babcock are delivering an initial 70 HMT 400-series vehicles for the British Army, with work divided between Supacat’s Devon manufacturing base and Babcock’s Devonport facility in Plymouth. The original arrangement includes options that could increase the programme substantially if the Ministry of Defence places further orders.

A later order added 53 Jackal 3 Extenda vehicles, extending the production run and again using the two-company industrial arrangement. The Extenda configuration provides additional payload capacity while retaining the HMT family’s high-mobility architecture, giving the Army a longer-wheelbase derivative alongside standard Jackal 3 vehicles.

Jones II therefore adds physical manufacturing headroom to a business already coordinating design authority, vehicle assembly, specialist suppliers, and partner production. Tactical vehicles are less complex than armoured fighting vehicles in some respects, but repeat production still depends on controlled fabrication, automotive supply, electrical integration, protection systems, quality assurance, and configuration management.

Those demands increase when the same platform is produced in several variants or adapted for different customers. A common HMT architecture can accept different payloads and mission equipment, but each configuration introduces choices around weight, electrical demand, communications, protection, cooling, mounting arrangements, and maintainability. Additional factory space only becomes useful production capacity when those interfaces are controlled properly.

Supacat occupies a relatively specialised position in the UK defence industrial base, focused on high-mobility military vehicles rather than large-volume commercial manufacture. Earlier Jackal and Coyote variants were assembled in significant numbers for British operations, while the current production cycle is as much about retaining design and manufacturing competence as replacing individual vehicles.

That matters because specialist defence capacity cannot be recreated immediately when demand returns. Skilled welders, technicians, design engineers, supply-chain specialists, and test personnel need to be retained or recruited, while tooling, drawings, production documentation, and supplier relationships have to remain current between major procurement cycles.

The expansion also arrives as UK defence policy places more emphasis on domestic output and shorter acquisition cycles. For a manufacturer concentrated in specialist mobility, an established design and an active production base can be commercially useful when customers want vehicles quickly, but only if the company can adapt configurations without disrupting serial manufacture.

More floor space can also provide practical separation between prototype, development, and production activity. Supacat has not said publicly that Jones II will be organised in this way, but additional manufacturing space creates more scope to develop customer-specific installations without allowing engineering changes to interfere with established vehicle builds.

The main unanswered question is utilisation. Supacat has not published an annual output increase, workforce target, or programme allocation for Jones II, so the building’s industrial importance will be determined by the contracts that pass through it rather than the opening itself.

Continued Jackal 3 deliveries, any exercise of remaining programme options, and new domestic or export orders will provide the clearer measure. If those orders arrive, Jones II gives Supacat more room to turn specialist mobility engineering into sustained production rather than asking an already committed site to absorb another programme. The added capacity also gives the company more resilience when prototype work and serial assembly need to run alongside one another without competing for the same floor space, tooling, or specialist staff.
