CSG lands m-plus military bridging orders

CSG has secured bridge-layer contracts worth more than $50 million. Dozens of AM-50 and AM-70 series systems will be supplied to five customers across Europe, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia.

CSG has secured several contracts worth more than $50 million in total for dozens of AM-50 and AM-70 series bridge-laying vehicles, with five customers across Europe, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia covered by the orders. Excalibur Army, the group’s Czech land-systems business, will handle deliveries.

The announcement consolidates contracts signed over recent months rather than identifying a single new procurement. CSG has not named the five customers, disclosed the number of vehicles in each order, divided the overall value between variants, or published delivery schedules. The confirmed order book therefore consists of dozens of systems across three regions with a combined value above $50 million.

Both vehicle families are designed to create temporary crossings over rivers, trenches, and other obstacles. Each carries a bridge section 13.5 metres long that can be deployed within minutes, allowing following vehicles to connect additional sections where the gap exceeds the length of a single span.

CSG says up to eight sections can be joined, producing a crossing of as much as 106 metres, with supports capable of extending into trenches around six metres deep. The modular arrangement allows operators to commit only the number of bridge vehicles required for a particular obstacle while retaining the option to assemble a substantially longer crossing.

The AM-50 EX and AM-70 EX differ principally in load classification. The AM-50 EX is rated at Military Load Classification 50 and the AM-70 EX at MLC 70 under STANAG 2021, giving the latter capacity for heavier military traffic. Both are based on Tatra 8×8 chassis and have a stated maximum road speed of 90km/h.

Customers can also specify armoured cabins providing protection up to Level 2 under STANAG 4569. That protection is relevant because bridging vehicles often have to operate close to the obstacle they are opening, where crews may remain exposed while deploying structural equipment and controlling the crossing.

The engineering burden extends well beyond carrying a steel bridge on a truck. The chassis has to remain stable while launching and recovering a long structural section, hydraulics must control heavy loads predictably, and the completed crossing has to transmit vehicle loads through several connected modules and supports without unacceptable deformation.

Repeatability becomes particularly important when several vehicles are working together. Sections manufactured at different times have to connect correctly in the field, while hinges, locking systems, hydraulic equipment, and structural interfaces must remain interchangeable enough for operators to combine modules without specialist adjustment. CSG says the systems can also maintain compatibility with earlier models, potentially preserving part of an existing customer’s bridging inventory.

The Tatra chassis gives the bridge-layer another form of commonality. Where customers already operate Tatra-based military vehicles, parts, maintenance knowledge, diagnostic equipment, and driver training can overlap with the engineering fleet. Specialist bridge equipment still creates its own support requirements, but a shared automotive baseline can reduce some of the logistics burden.

Producing dozens of vehicles for five customers will nevertheless create configuration management work for Excalibur Army. Cabin protection, radios, markings, tools, environmental preparation, spares packages, training, and acceptance procedures can vary between nations even where the chassis and bridge architecture remain similar. Smaller military production runs are particularly vulnerable to losing efficiency when every customer-specific change is allowed to create a separate manufacturing baseline.

Military bridging equipment has also become more prominent as armed forces rebuild heavy land formations. Tanks, tracked infantry vehicles, artillery, recovery equipment, and logistics fleets can place loads well above civilian traffic, while damaged infrastructure or deliberate demolition can remove established crossing points at short notice. Mobility engineering therefore determines whether more conspicuous combat equipment can actually reach the area in which it is required.

The same requirement extends into sustainment. Bridge sections are large structures exposed to repeated dynamic loading, rough handling, and environmental wear, so inspection and repair procedures form an important part of through-life support. Hydraulic systems, chassis components, connectors, and structural elements need spares and maintenance long after the delivery contract has been completed.

CSG has not yet provided enough information to judge the production cadence behind the $50 million-plus order book. Named customers, variant quantities, factory schedules, and first deliveries would provide a clearer measure of how the contracts translate into workload for Excalibur Army and Tatra.

The orders do establish continued demand for equipment that rarely receives the attention attached to tanks or missile systems. A formation can own plenty of both and still stop at a river. Five customers have now committed more than $50 million to making sure that particular piece of geography remains negotiable.
