Ford, General Dynamics Land Systems-UK and Ricardo have formed a team to compete for the UK Ministry of Defence’s Light Mobility Vehicle programme with military derivatives of the Ranger and Ranger Super Duty.
The proposal combines a high-volume commercial platform with UK-based defence integration and engineering. Ford will supply the base vehicle and support upfitting and aftersales activity, GDLS-UK will act as prime contractor and lead militarised conversion in South Wales, and Ricardo will provide engineering support to adapt the platform to British Army requirements.
LMV is intended to modernise roles currently filled by Land Rover and Pinzgauer fleets and provide a common wheeled utility platform for warfighting roles across the Joint Force. A Defence Equipment and Support preliminary market-engagement notice estimates the programme at £750 million excluding VAT, or £900 million including VAT, with an indicative contract period from April 2027 to April 2033.
Those figures remain planning estimates rather than an awarded contract. The procurement notice explicitly states that market engagement does not commit the Ministry of Defence to a procurement exercise, leaving Ford, GDLS-UK and Ricardo as one prospective team positioning for the eventual competition.
The industrial proposition is based on retaining as much commercial scale as possible before military equipment is integrated. The standard Ranger offers a one-tonne payload and up to 3.5 tonnes of towing capacity, while Ranger Super Duty extends payload to just under two tonnes, gross train mass to eight tonnes, and towing capacity to as much as 4.5 tonnes.
Those figures apply to the commercial donor vehicles rather than the eventual military configuration. Protection, communications, weapon mounts, mission systems, additional electrical loads, environmental requirements, and other modifications can change vehicle mass and available payload significantly, so the usefulness of the commercial baseline will depend on how much capability can be added without eroding the original performance margins.
Ford’s UK contribution includes engineering at Dunton and production at Dagenham of the 3.0-litre V6 engine used in Ranger. GDLS-UK plans to undertake specialist defence integration and militarised conversion at Merthyr Tydfil and Oakdale in South Wales, while Ricardo will support the upfitting design and engineering. The three companies say their combined UK operations employ more than 7,000 people.
The proposed model reflects a familiar military mobility trade-off between bespoke development and adaptation of an established commercial vehicle. A commercial platform brings mature production processes, an existing parts network, and the possibility of rapidly increasing output, but military duty cycles can expose weaknesses that are less important in normal civilian use.
Vehicle structure, suspension, cooling, electrical generation, electromagnetic compatibility, payload distribution, and environmental performance all have to be reconsidered once defence equipment is installed. Protection packages can also impose a large weight penalty, while radios and electronic systems add power demand to a vehicle architecture originally designed around a commercial specification.
Through-life support is therefore central to the team’s pitch. Ford lists 171 UK dealers, 405 authorised repair sites, and 120 mobile service vans, backed by a larger European and global network. Common commercial parts and service capacity could reduce the support burden for routine vehicle systems, although military-specific equipment would still require controlled defence maintenance and configuration management.
The Army is also replacing an unusually old fleet. The Ministry of Defence said in March that more than 5,000 Land Rovers remained in UK military service in 2025 as retirement of the type began, with the first new light mobility vehicles expected to reach soldiers by 2030.
Ricardo and GDLS-UK bring previous military land-system integration experience to the bid, giving the team an engineering layer between Ford’s commercial production system and the Army requirement. That distinction will determine whether the proposal can preserve the cost and availability advantages of a mass-produced pickup once military modifications are applied.
Ford’s wider manufacturing network also gives the team a route to production scale that would be difficult to reproduce through a small bespoke military vehicle line. The benefit is only retained, however, if the military conversion remains compatible with the donor vehicle’s supply and manufacturing structure rather than creating so many specialist components that the commercial advantage largely disappears.
The Ministry of Defence has not yet selected a supplier. The competition will test whether a Ranger-derived vehicle can meet the Army’s final mobility, payload, support, and integration requirements while retaining enough commercial commonality to make automotive scale worth bringing into the programme.
