Northrop Grumman has received an $862.8 million US Army contract to manufacture, inspect, test, package, and deliver M1156 Precision Guidance Kits and associated variants through September 2031.

The firm-fixed-price indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity award was placed by Army Contracting Command in Newark, New Jersey. Individual delivery orders will determine actual quantities, work locations, and funding, meaning the $862.8 million figure is a contract ceiling rather than money committed immediately to a single production batch.

The M1156 is designed to replace a conventional artillery fuze and add GPS-based trajectory correction to compatible 155mm projectiles. Control surfaces and onboard navigation allow the kit to correct a shell’s flight after launch, reducing dispersion without requiring the complete projectile to be manufactured as a purpose-built guided munition.

The Army has qualified the kit for use with existing 155mm ammunition families, including conventional high-explosive and rocket-assisted projectiles. The fuze-well architecture separates much of the precision component from the projectile body, allowing compatible ammunition to gain guidance according to mission and inventory requirements.

That places PGK between conventional artillery ammunition and more complex guided projectiles. It does not give an ordinary shell every capability associated with a bespoke precision weapon, but it can reduce the number of rounds required to achieve a comparable effect where the kit’s accuracy and operating conditions are sufficient.

Manufacturing the kit is a demanding electronics and mechanical problem despite its comparatively compact size. Each assembly has to survive long-term storage, transport, gun handling, extreme acceleration, rotation, vibration, and the thermal environment generated by artillery firing before its navigation and control systems can make useful corrections in flight.

The Army’s contract consequently lists inspection and testing alongside manufacture. Guidance electronics that function on a production bench are of little value if connectors, control surfaces, fuze components, or internal assemblies cannot tolerate gun launch, while failures that appear only after delivery are difficult to investigate once ammunition has moved into the wider logistics system.

Northrop has produced the PGK family for more than a decade. The company says nearly 145,000 kits have been delivered and reports a 98% point reliability rate across the family since 2013, giving the current programme a manufacturing history that is considerably more mature than many newer precision-munition developments.

The product is still evolving. Northrop’s PGK E5 work is intended to improve operation in GPS-degraded environments while retaining compatibility with standard NATO/JBMOU 155mm projectile fuze wells. The company publishes threshold accuracy of 50 metres circular error probable and an objective of 30 metres for the E5 configuration.

The September Army contract does not state which variants will be ordered, so those E5 specifications should not be attached automatically to every kit bought under the new IDIQ. The contract explicitly allows M1156 PGK and variants, leaving the precise production mix to individual orders.

That order-by-order structure also lets the Army adjust demand without renegotiating an entirely new production framework each time requirements change. Northrop and its suppliers gain a five-year contracting horizon, while actual factory output can follow funded orders rather than an assumed quantity derived from the ceiling value.

Maintaining that production base requires more than final assembly capacity. Guidance kits depend on electronics, mechanical components, control surfaces, specialised test equipment, software configuration, and ammunition-related quality processes, all of which have to scale together if annual output increases.

Packaging is part of the same industrial problem. Artillery components may remain in storage for extended periods before moving through depots and field logistics, exposing them to handling, shock, moisture, temperature changes, and other environmental conditions. The production line therefore has to deliver a protected, documented, deployable component rather than an electronics assembly awaiting later preparation.

PGK also gives the Army a way to improve the performance of its existing artillery inventory without linking every accuracy improvement to a new gun or a new complete projectile family. As long as physical, ballistic, and system compatibility are maintained, the guidance component can evolve on a partially independent cycle.

The $862.8 million contract now provides the purchasing framework through 2031. The more informative production figures will come from the delivery orders placed against it — quantities, variants, and manufacturing rates that show how much of the ceiling is converted into hardware and how quickly the industrial base is expected to deliver it.
