Northrop Grumman extends B-2 trailing-edge production

Northrop Grumman will manufacture additional B-2 hot trailing edge components. The $18.7m DLA modification extends Utah-based production through July 2029 for a specialised part of the bomber’s composite sustainment chain.

Northrop Grumman has received an $18.73m Defense Logistics Agency modification for manufacture and production of hot trailing edges for the B-2 Spirit bomber. The firm-fixed-price action modifies an existing delivery order under a wider indefinite-quantity contract, with work to be performed in Utah and completion scheduled for 10 July 2029.

Fiscal 2026 defence working-capital funding supports the order, which is being managed by DLA Aviation at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma. The notice does not disclose how many components will be produced, which aircraft they will support, or whether the output is intended for scheduled replacement, depot stocks, repairs, or longer-term spares.

The B-2 hot trailing edge is a specialist structure rather than a routine metallic flight-control component. Public Air Force research has described the area as relying on advanced composite materials and operating under demanding thermal and structural conditions while remaining part of an aircraft whose aerodynamic form and low-observable characteristics are closely linked.

Previous Air Force Research Laboratory work examined ways to increase durability and reduce repair requirements around the structure. That activity included evaluation of composite materials, long-duration and elevated-temperature testing, mechanical assessment, cure-cycle development, repairability work, and manufacturing demonstrations before progression towards larger-scale tooling.

Those earlier programmes explain the manufacturing challenge without proving the exact material configuration of the latest production order. The DLA notice provides no drawing, material specification, configuration standard, or manufacturing process. What it does confirm is that new hot trailing edge hardware is being produced under a contract extending into 2029.

Utah has long been associated with specialist B-2 composite sustainment. Hill Air Force Base developed dedicated low-observable composite repair capability with Northrop Grumman and the Air Force Research Laboratory after some work transferred from California. Infrastructure associated with that capability has included large autoclaves, non-destructive inspection equipment, controlled work areas, cutting systems, and tooling for complex composite structures.

Air Force accounts of the partnership describe work across B-2 flight-control surfaces, wingtips, leading edges, doors, panels, and other composite elements. They also document activity on improved hot trailing edge skins. The latest DLA notice identifies Utah as the performance location but does not specify the individual facility, production cell, or precise division of labour between Northrop Grumman and government organisations.

The sustainment challenge is magnified by the size of the B-2 fleet. With only 20 aircraft listed in active inventory, including a test aircraft, there is no large pool of spare bombers from which structural components can simply be drawn. Availability depends instead on depot maintenance, low-observable repair capability, engineering knowledge, specialist suppliers, and the ability to manufacture replacement items long after the original aircraft production run ended.

Stealth also places additional demands on structural work. The B-2’s low observability is derived from a combination of shape, materials, coatings, and management of radar, infrared, acoustic, electromagnetic, and visual signatures. Work on exposed surfaces therefore has to satisfy conventional structural and aerodynamic requirements while maintaining the configuration required for signature control.

That makes apparently modest component contracts disproportionately important. A strategic bomber may represent billions of dollars of acquisition and upgrade investment, but readiness can still be constrained by the availability of comparatively small quantities of specialist structures whose manufacturing processes require dedicated tooling, controlled materials, inspection, and qualified labour.

Northrop Grumman remains the B-2 prime contractor and system integrator, giving it a continuing role in sustaining an aircraft whose original production line closed decades ago. Modern support consequently combines original design knowledge with government depots, redesigned components, improved materials, selective new manufacture, and a supplier base capable of supporting low-volume specialist work.

Recent B-2 structural recovery programmes have demonstrated the same pattern, with Air Force and Northrop Grumman teams applying advanced composite repair and low-observable processes to return damaged aircraft to service. Such work receives less attention than new bomber procurement, but it determines how much capability remains available from the existing fleet while the B-21 programme develops.

The new hot trailing edge order extends one part of that industrial system to July 2029. Its $18.73m maximum value is relatively small in strategic-aircraft terms, yet the requirement illustrates the economics of sustaining a small and highly specialised fleet: limited quantities can still demand dedicated engineering, manufacturing, tooling, test, and qualification capacity.
