Perennial and Neros lead Drone Dominance Gauntlet II

Perennial and Neros topped separate Drone Dominance Gauntlet mission areas. The results advance a Pentagon acquisition programme built around competitive testing, rapid manufacturing, and high-volume drone procurement.

Perennial Autonomy and Neros have taken the leading positions in separate mission categories during the second Drone Dominance Gauntlet, advancing a US acquisition programme that combines operational testing with explicit manufacturing requirements for low-cost one-way attack drones.

Perennial ranked highest in the deep-strike mission area, while Neros led the close-quarters category. Aviation Week reported the results following Gauntlet II, with both companies also having performed strongly during the programme’s first competition.

The second Gauntlet follows a much broader qualification process. The Drone Dominance programme invited 49 companies to the Phase 2 qualifier at Camp Grayling, Michigan, testing approximately 79 different aircraft across mission areas that included long-range strike and tactical operations in confined environments.

Nineteen companies advanced to Gauntlet II at Fort Carson, Colorado. Before reaching the final test event, each advancing supplier was required to fulfil an order for 120 drones with lethality payloads in approximately five weeks, adding a manufacturing test before the operational evaluation began.

That requirement is important because Drone Dominance is designed around production as well as flight performance. A company can demonstrate a capable aircraft at prototype level without possessing the tooling, supply chain, workforce, quality systems, or component availability needed to deliver thousands of repeatable systems.

The 120-drone stage forces those weaknesses to appear earlier. Suppliers have to source motors, batteries, electronics, communications equipment, airframes, payload interfaces, and ground-control hardware quickly enough to deliver a production batch rather than a handful of hand-built demonstrators.

Gauntlet II then shifts emphasis back towards operational performance. Official programme documentation states that military operators fly the systems during mission scenarios, allowing handling, communications, setup time, navigation, and operator workload to influence the result alongside range, speed, and payload performance.

The programme describes itself as challenge-based acquisition rather than a conventional single down-select. Vendors that fail to progress during one phase can return for later opportunities, while successive competitions are intended to increase quantities and tighten supply-chain requirements.

That model supports several manufacturers rather than committing the entire requirement to one air vehicle. Maintaining multiple production routes can reduce dependence on a single supplier, although it does not automatically remove lower-tier risks if several winning drones rely on the same batteries, motors, processors, communications components, or energetic materials.

The official programme timetable says Gauntlet I resulted in orders for 30,000 drones. Drone Dominance describes Gauntlet II as its second phase and states that the wider programme intends to purchase more than 200,000 drones by 2027.

Phase 2 documentation also established significant follow-on quantities for successful Gauntlet II suppliers. The Request for Solutions says top-performing companies can receive prototype delivery orders of at least 4,000 drones, while earlier programme announcements described plans to place substantial orders across the highest-ranked performers.

The exact distribution of those orders has not been confirmed in the current public leaderboard material. Perennial’s and Neros’s leading positions should therefore be treated as test results rather than as evidence that either company has already received a specific production quantity.

That distinction matters because the industrial competition continues after the leaderboard is published. Suppliers still have to convert test performance into contracted orders, establish repeatable production schedules, and demonstrate that quality remains stable when output rises from hundreds of aircraft to thousands.

Perennial publicly presents its aircraft and autonomy systems around scalable production, while Neros has built its business around tactical, attritable one-way drones and a US manufacturing base. Their Gauntlet II positions provide evidence of performance within the government test structure, but the next procurement milestones will determine how that performance translates into factory workload.

Cost discipline will remain part of the equation. The attraction of low-cost one-way aircraft depends on being able to buy them in numbers that would be difficult to sustain with conventional precision weapons. Manufacturing methods, commercial electronics, simplified airframes, and rapid iteration all contribute to that model, but component shortages or complex payload integration can quickly erode the assumed cost advantage.

Supply-chain resilience is therefore likely to become more important as later phases increase quantities. Manufacturers need enough visibility to reserve parts and expand assembly capacity without committing excessive capital before order volumes are known. The programme’s repeated competitions are intended to provide a continuing demand signal while preserving competition between suppliers.

Gauntlet II has now identified leading performers in its two reported mission areas. The next meaningful measure will be how prototype-delivery orders are distributed and whether the selected manufacturers can maintain cost, configuration, and delivery performance when the programme moves from competition batches towards sustained production at scale.
