HENSOLDT plans to establish a software-defined defence centre near Stuttgart, creating around 300 roles and offering experienced Bosch engineers a route from automotive development into defence systems work.

The proposed centre of excellence will occupy vacant space at Bosch’s site in Leinfelden under a cooperation agreement between the two companies. Bosch employees with experience in systems development, software engineering, and electrical engineering will be able to apply for HENSOLDT positions as the sensor and electronics group expands its software capability.

The arrangement links a defence company seeking specialist capacity with an automotive workforce accustomed to complex electronic architectures, safety-critical development, and disciplined configuration control. Those skills are increasingly relevant as military systems depend on software for sensor processing, communications, mission management, and upgrades delivered throughout service.

Automotive methods enter defence development

HENSOLDT intends the Leinfelden centre to develop software architectures for networked, updateable defence systems. It will also adapt methods established in automotive engineering, where software, electronics, diagnostics, and product variants must be managed across long supplier chains and large fleets.

The site will support further development, integration, and industrialisation of multi-domain capabilities for HENSOLDT’s MDOcore software suite. The company presents MDOcore as an architecture for combining data and functions across sensors, effectors, platforms, and command systems, placing greater responsibility on the software layer that connects otherwise separate equipment.

That shift changes the meaning of defence production capacity. Factories, test equipment, and qualified component suppliers remain essential, but programmes also require teams able to maintain code, data models, interfaces, cyber controls, and digital development environments. Software-defined systems can receive capability updates more quickly than hardware-led platforms, provided releases can be tested and assured without destabilising connected systems.

Automotive engineering provides relevant experience in modular software, electronic integration, automated testing, and functional safety. Defence programmes impose different security, assurance, and operational requirements, but both sectors must coordinate hardware and software across products that remain in use for years and pass through repeated revisions.

The cooperation also responds to pressure within Germany’s industrial labour market. Automotive businesses are restructuring as vehicle architectures, propulsion systems, and production strategies change, while defence companies are recruiting to support larger order books and accelerated delivery schedules. The Leinfelden plan creates a defined route for retaining engineering expertise in Baden-Württemberg rather than relying solely on individual moves through the open labour market.

Recruitment must translate into programme capacity

HENSOLDT recruited around 1,200 employees during 2025 and plans to take on another 1,600 in 2026, primarily in Germany. Its sites at Ulm, Oberkochen and Aalen, and Immenstaad are experiencing particularly strong growth, placing the proposed centre within a wider expansion of engineering and production resources.

Headcount alone will not create usable delivery capacity. Engineers transferring from automotive work will require security clearances, defence-specific training, access to controlled development environments, and familiarity with military standards and procurement processes. HENSOLDT will also need to connect the new team with established sensor, hardware, integration, and test organisations.

Using an existing Bosch building may shorten the route to occupation compared with constructing a new facility, although the site will still need secure networks, controlled laboratories, and processes suitable for classified or export-controlled work. HENSOLDT has not disclosed the investment value, opening date, building area, or the distribution of roles between software, systems, and electrical engineering.

Those details will determine how quickly the centre begins to affect active programmes. Software development and systems-engineering tasks can be performed away from specialised manufacturing facilities, but representative sensors, communications equipment, and command systems will still be needed for integration and verification.

The workforce model is notable because it treats industrial transition as a source of defence capacity. Rather than allowing experienced teams to disperse during automotive restructuring, Bosch and HENSOLDT have created a route between sectors with overlapping technical disciplines. The approach preserves regional skills while giving the defence company access to engineers familiar with mature development processes.

HENSOLDT reported revenue of €2.46 billion in 2025 and employed around 9,500 people. Its expansion from sensor supplier towards broader systems integration makes software expertise increasingly important, particularly where customers expect radar, optronics, electronic warfare, and command functions to operate within a common digital architecture.

The centre will be judged by the programmes it supports rather than the number of desks it fills. Security approvals, technical onboarding, and integration with existing teams must convert available automotive expertise into tested defence software before the Leinfelden site can become the capacity increase described in the agreement.
