The Bundeswehr has ordered another 56 HX81 Elefant 2 heavy-equipment transporters from Rheinmetall, extending a framework programme as Germany expands the machinery required to move tanks and other heavy combat vehicles.
Valued at approximately €60.5 million gross, the contract is due to be delivered during 2026 and 2027 by Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles.
Germany originally established a framework covering up to 137 tractor units and ordered an initial batch of 32 vehicles. The latest extension reflects a wider demand for heavy transport as the Bundeswehr rebuilds readiness and prepares to support NATO movement across central Europe.
Powered by a 680hp eight-cylinder diesel engine, the HX81 has a technically permissible gross combination weight of 135 tonnes and can reach a maximum road speed of approximately 89km/h.
A twin-winch arrangement provides two 20-tonne pulling systems for loading or recovering heavy vehicles. The tractor also uses a cab family shared with other Bundeswehr transport vehicles, creating some commonality across training, maintenance, and spares.
Elefant 2 operates alongside the protected Mammut transporter. The unarmoured HX81 is suited to movement away from the most exposed areas, while Mammut provides greater crew protection where threats require it.
Heavy-equipment transport receives less attention than the tank on the trailer, although it directly affects how rapidly armoured units can deploy without consuming tracks, fuel, and maintenance life.
Driving a tank over long road distances accelerates wear and can damage civilian infrastructure. Rail transport offers an alternative, but suitable wagons, loading points, routes, and schedules may not always be available where forces need them.
Germany’s position between ports, depots, training areas, railheads, and NATO’s eastern members gives the fleet significance beyond national movement. Allied reinforcement plans depend on German roads and logistics infrastructure functioning under sustained demand.
Vehicle weight is continuing to rise as tanks and engineering platforms receive additional armour, sensors, defensive systems, electronic equipment, and weapons. Transporters selected around earlier assumptions can lose their payload margin as combat vehicles are upgraded.
The 135-tonne combination rating provides capacity across tractor, semitrailer, and payload, though route limitations remain. Bridge ratings, axle loads, overhead clearance, road geometry, permits, and traffic management can prevent use of the shortest route.
Manufacturing the HX81 involves more than strengthening a commercial truck. Heavy military tractors use reinforced chassis structures, specialised cooling, high-capacity braking, recovery systems, military lighting, communications, towing interfaces, and connections for large semitrailers.
Axles, transmissions, tyres, hydraulics, brakes, and winches operate under severe loads, while the tractor must remain controllable on gradients, wet surfaces, and damaged roads.
A standardised cab can reduce support complexity, but specialist components remain difficult to sustain. A scarce hydraulic controller, winch part, seal, tyre, or trailer interface can immobilise a vehicle even when common engine parts remain available.
Deliveries during 2026 and 2027 will enter a European land-systems market already carrying strong demand across trucks, armour, artillery, air defence, ammunition, and support equipment.
Suppliers serving several programmes may become constrained by castings, forgings, bearings, tyres, electronics, or skilled labour. Rheinmetall’s production plan must therefore align lower-volume specialist components with the main assembly schedule.
Testing will also consume capacity. Every tractor needs braking, electrical, road, winch, and coupling checks before acceptance, while completed combinations require evidence that they can safely move representative loads.
The expansion of heavy transport follows the same direction as current armoured programmes. Challenger 3 trials are establishing the production standard for Britain’s upgraded tanks, while Germany and other European states are adding or modernising fleets with greater mass and electronic complexity.
Each combat-vehicle investment creates parallel demand for transporters, recovery vehicles, bridging, workshops, fuel systems, and spare-parts distribution.
Support fleets have frequently been treated as secondary purchases, leaving modern combat vehicles dependent on ageing tractors and trailers. That imbalance reduces strategic mobility and transfers additional wear onto high-value platforms.
Framework orders can provide continuity for Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles and its suppliers. Maintaining tooling, trained teams, and recurring component orders is more efficient than restarting a low-volume production line after a lengthy gap.
Continuity also supports incremental improvement. Reliability data from earlier vehicles can be incorporated into later batches without a complete redesign, provided changes remain controlled across documentation, spares, and training.
The Bundeswehr will still need drivers, maintainers, semitrailers, route planning, permits, and maintenance capacity to use the fleet effectively. Heavy-transport crews require specialist training, particularly when manoeuvring long combinations in civilian infrastructure.
Availability will depend on workshop equipment and recovery support capable of handling the tractor and trailer themselves. A disabled heavy transporter creates a substantial roadside problem even before its payload is considered.
The order addresses a basic constraint that cannot be compensated for through doctrine or software. Tanks and engineering vehicles only contribute to operations when they can reach the required location with enough mechanical life remaining to fight or work.
Europe’s renewed investment in armour is creating a parallel market for the equipment that carries, recovers, refuels, and repairs it. Elefant 2 sits within that less visible production base, where transport capacity determines whether expensive combat vehicles remain mobile assets or static inventory.
