US Army funds four Anniston depot facilities

The US Army has funded four major Anniston depot facilities. The $658.2m construction award covers component remanufacture, missile maintenance, painting, and storage, with completion scheduled for August 2030.

The US Army has awarded $658.2 million for the design and construction of four facilities at Anniston Army Depot in Alabama, expanding infrastructure used for component remanufacture, missile maintenance, painting, and storage.

Brasfield & Gorrie will undertake the work under a contract with a cumulative face value of approximately $986.9 million. Construction is scheduled for completion on 30 August 2030, with the full value of the latest award funded from fiscal 2026 Army military-construction appropriations.

Brasfield & Gorrie secured the award after an internet solicitation attracted two bids. Army Mission and Installation Contracting Command at Fort Sam Houston is administering the contract.

The four facilities serve distinct industrial functions rather than creating one general-purpose maintenance building. Component remanufacture, missile work, paint processes, and storage each require different material flows, utilities, environmental controls, safety measures, lifting equipment, and quality procedures.

Anniston is one of the Army’s principal organic industrial-base locations for ground equipment. The depot is the designated Center of Industrial and Technical Excellence for tracked and wheeled ground combat vehicles other than Bradley, towed and self-propelled artillery, assault bridging systems, small-calibre weapons, locomotives, rail equipment, and non-tactical generators.

Its vehicle workload includes M1 Abrams tanks, M88 recovery vehicles, Strykers, M113s, M9 ACE combat earthmovers, and Assault Breacher Vehicles. Major components are also overhauled and returned to stock, placing remanufacturing alongside complete vehicle work at the centre of the depot’s industrial mission.

The planned component facility addresses a process that has historically been dispersed. Army documentation for the project has previously described component repair operating across 14 separate buildings in the Nichols Industrial Complex, with consolidation intended to improve efficiency and material movement.

Remanufacturing is particularly important in an ageing fleet because many assemblies are recovered rather than discarded. Components can be stripped, inspected, repaired, machined, rebuilt, tested, and returned to inventory, allowing existing equipment to remain supportable while reducing reliance on complete replacement assemblies.

The condition of incoming equipment makes that workload difficult to standardise. A Government Accountability Office review released in August found that maintainers at Anniston and Red River Army Depot face uncertainty around vehicle condition, parts availability, current technical data, workload planning, ageing maintenance equipment, and workforce capacity.

The two depots accounted for more than $7.1 billion of Army operating expenditure between fiscal 2021 and 2025, with most of the work involving maintenance and repair of ground vehicles. Repair and refurbishment of reusable parts represented the largest share of workload at both locations.

GAO also found that permanent and term-limited employment fell across the two depots between 2021 and 2025. Contractor hiring partly offset those reductions, although depot officials reported difficulty recruiting and retaining experienced workers in skilled occupations.

That makes new infrastructure only one part of the capacity equation. Purpose-designed buildings can improve flow, lifting, ventilation, safety, process separation, and equipment layout, but they still require experienced mechanics, welders, electricians, machinists, inspectors, technicians, planners, and supervisors to translate floor space into completed work.

Anniston has already been adding modernised facilities around its vehicle mission. A new $44 million combat-vehicle welding facility opened earlier in 2026, providing a 34,000-square-foot climate-controlled environment for heavy vehicle work.

The latest contract extends that investment into functions surrounding vehicle and weapons sustainment. Dedicated painting infrastructure can separate finishing processes from other production activity, while improved storage can reduce congestion around parts, completed assemblies, and material awaiting inspection or processing.

Missile maintenance requires a different set of controls. Anniston’s wider mission includes conventional ammunition and missile maintenance and storage, along with the US defence establishment’s missile recycling capability, so the new building will form part of an existing energetic-material and weapons-support operation rather than introducing the mission to the site.

Construction itself will have to be managed around an active industrial complex. Anniston cannot suspend vehicle, component, and weapons work until the new facilities are complete, leaving the Army and contractor to phase demolition, construction, utilities, access, and material movement around ongoing production.

The August 2030 completion date puts the project on a considerably longer timescale than most individual repair orders passing through the depot. By the time the buildings enter service, the Army’s vehicle fleet and sustainment requirements will have evolved further, making adaptable layouts and support infrastructure as important as the immediate processes specified in the contract.

The award gives Anniston substantial new physical capacity, but buildings alone do not repair engines, restore combat vehicles, or return components to stock. The industrial gain will come only when the new facilities are matched by the workforce, technical data, tooling, parts, and production discipline needed to keep material moving through them.
