Rocket Lab establishes German space subsidiary

Rocket Lab has established a German subsidiary for European expansion. The company is building on its Mynaric acquisition as it targets sovereign satellite, optical communications, component, and launch programmes.

Rocket Lab has established Rocket Lab Germany GmbH, creating a dedicated corporate base from which it intends to pursue European sovereign space programmes and potentially expand satellite, payload, and component manufacturing in Germany. The move builds on the company’s acquisition of Munich-based laser communications specialist Mynaric and broadens its European position beyond the supply of individual spacecraft components.

The German subsidiary is being presented as a route into both commercial and government programmes. Rocket Lab says future activity could include constellation-class satellite manufacturing, payload production, spacecraft components, and access to its Electron and developing Neutron launch vehicles. Defence and national-security demand form a significant part of that proposition as European governments place greater emphasis on assured access to space capability and local industrial capacity.

Mynaric gives Rocket Lab an existing physical and technical base in Germany. The company completed its acquisition of the laser communications business in April 2026, retaining its Munich headquarters and its specialist work on optical terminals. Rocket Lab intends to apply its own manufacturing and supply-chain methods to increase production scale and efficiency while continuing development of future optical communications equipment.

Those terminals have an increasingly important role in proliferated satellite architectures. Optical crosslinks allow spacecraft to exchange large quantities of data directly rather than routing every transmission through a ground station. For defence constellations, that can increase network resilience and reduce latency, although it also creates demanding requirements around pointing accuracy, production consistency, radiation tolerance, and network management.

Mynaric was already connected to Rocket Lab’s national-security work before the acquisition. Its CONDOR optical terminals have been associated with spacecraft being produced for US Space Development Agency programmes, giving Rocket Lab experience of the German company as both a technology provider and a supplier operating within larger constellation production schedules.

The creation of Rocket Lab Germany turns that relationship into a wider industrial proposition. Rather than treating Europe only as a customer for US-produced launch and spacecraft systems, the company is signalling that selected manufacturing could be placed inside Germany where programme demand justifies the investment. That would require local production engineering, supplier qualification, test facilities, skilled labour, and the quality systems needed to support national-security spacecraft rather than simply a larger sales presence.

Rocket Lab’s strategy increasingly spans the full spacecraft supply chain. Alongside launch vehicles, its portfolio includes satellite buses, solar products, separation systems, radios, reaction wheels, flight software, optical communications, and other space hardware. Acquisitions have accelerated that integration, giving the company control over technologies that would otherwise be sourced from separate specialist suppliers.

That model has attractions for governments trying to place spacecraft into service quickly because fewer organisational boundaries can simplify interface management and production scheduling. It also creates a more concentrated supplier relationship, making questions around sovereignty, intellectual property, software access, and export control more important when the customer is a European defence ministry rather than a commercial satellite operator.

A German manufacturing footprint does not automatically resolve those questions. Rocket Lab remains a US-headquartered company, and sensitive programmes may still have to navigate American and European regulatory controls. European customers will therefore have to decide how much sovereign value is created by production and engineering performed locally when corporate ownership and parts of the wider technology base remain overseas.

The company’s approach appears designed to provide more flexibility around that calculation. Mynaric contributes established German personnel, facilities, and optical expertise, while Rocket Lab Germany creates the structure through which additional work could be placed locally. Customers could therefore procure selected German-built systems while drawing on the wider group for launch, spacecraft manufacturing, and specialised components.

Rocket Lab has not announced a new German satellite factory or a major government production order alongside the subsidiary. The scale of the manufacturing expansion remains dependent on contracts, making the present development an industrial positioning move rather than evidence that a new constellation production line is already under construction.

Even so, establishing the subsidiary changes the company’s European posture. Rocket Lab entered Germany through the acquisition of a specialist optical communications business; it is now proposing a broader sovereign-space offering encompassing spacecraft, payloads, components, communications, and launch.

The next meaningful milestone will be whether European procurement converts that corporate footprint into additional physical capacity. If it does, Munich could become part of a much wider Rocket Lab manufacturing network rather than remaining primarily the home of one acquired laser communications business.
