The US Army is expanding its UAS Marketplace to include Group 3 unmanned aircraft, payloads, software, components, and a new capability-selection tool, extending a digital purchasing model that has recorded more than $750m in sales since launching in March.
The marketplace was created as a route through which Army units can buy vetted unmanned systems without starting a separate conventional acquisition process for every requirement. The latest expansion moves it beyond the smaller Group 1 and Group 2 aircraft that formed much of its initial offering and into systems with greater speed, endurance, range, and payload capacity.
A new Call for Solutions is open for Group 3 aircraft, while a separate call covers payloads, software, components, enablers, and accessories. Product listings are being added weekly, giving suppliers repeated entry points rather than concentrating procurement around a small number of long-duration platform competitions.
The second call could prove as important as the addition of larger aircraft. Opening the marketplace to subsystems allows specialist companies to compete around sensors, communications, electronic-warfare payloads, software, and accessories without supplying an entire air vehicle, while Army buyers can build more of the required configuration around a base platform.
The accompanying capability-selection tool is designed to make that modularity manageable. Units can select a base system and then add payloads, accessories, and training, while comparing characteristics including category, price, range, endurance, and user ratings. The structure resembles a commercial storefront, but the hardware behind it remains subject to defence acquisition and security requirements.
Army assessors conduct physical system teardowns and cyber inspections during vendor onboarding to integrate National Defense Authorization Act compliance into the process. Products that pass can receive cleared status authorising unrestricted direct purchase through the marketplace, while resulting inspection reports can also support suppliers seeking Defense Contract Management Agency Blue List certification.
That assurance work is essential because commercial unmanned systems evolve far faster than conventional military platforms. Manufacturers can substitute radios, processors, cameras, batteries, or other electronics during a product’s commercial life, creating configurations that appear identical from the outside while carrying a different component supply chain.
A procurement system built around speed therefore needs an equally responsive configuration-control process. Clearing one version of a drone cannot automatically guarantee that a later production batch uses the same components, and cyber assurance can become obsolete when firmware, communications software, or third-party libraries change.
Adding payloads and software increases the number of combinations the Army has to manage. A sensor may be physically compatible with several airframes but still create differences in power consumption, cooling, electromagnetic compatibility, centre of gravity, data interfaces, communications bandwidth, or flight endurance.
The selection tool can tell a buyer which products are listed as compatible, but engineering assurance still has to sit behind those combinations. Without controlled interfaces and repeatable testing, a modular marketplace risks creating a large catalogue of individually approved products that do not perform predictably when assembled into mission systems.
Group 3 aircraft increase that burden because higher-value and longer-range platforms place more consequence on failure. Units buying small expendable systems can tolerate a different risk profile from formations relying on an aircraft for persistent surveillance, electronic effects, communications relay, or other missions requiring hours of reliable operation.
The Army is also extending the marketplace beyond domestic users. Twenty-three allied partner nations have signed statements of intent associated with the service’s Foreign Military Sales Fast Lane initiative. Suppliers interested in foreign sales can have products evaluated and pre-cleared for partner purchase, potentially allowing the same technical assessment to support several customers.
That could give smaller manufacturers access to allied demand without forcing every national customer to repeat the full US qualification process. It also makes configuration control more important because exported hardware has to remain aligned with the version assessed and approved through the marketplace, particularly where communications, encryption, and supply-chain restrictions apply.
The reported $750m in sales indicates that the marketplace has already progressed beyond a small procurement experiment. Its significance now lies less in the storefront itself than in whether the Army can make rapid buying coexist with cyber inspection, component assurance, modular integration, training, and support.
Traditional defence acquisition is often criticised for moving too slowly for commercial drone technology. A digital marketplace can shorten the route between supplier and unit, but it cannot abolish the engineering work that makes a system safe, secure, interoperable, and supportable. Moving that work into faster inspection and qualification cycles is the difficult part of the model.
Group 3 systems and independently selectable payloads will provide the sharper test. If the Army can keep approval data current while configurations change weekly, the marketplace could become a durable acquisition channel for a fast-moving part of the defence industrial base. If assurance falls behind the catalogue, the service will simply have built a quicker way to acquire integration problems.
