StandardAero has secured a position on a new ten-year US Air Force contract covering depot-level maintenance of Rolls-Royce T56 engines, extending a support relationship with the service that began in 1999.
The indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity, firm-fixed-price contract has a maximum ceiling of $342.2 million. StandardAero will provide depot-level repair and overhaul of T56 engines, modules, and components supporting US Air Force, US Navy, and Foreign Military Sales requirements across a global fleet of more than 1,200 C-130 aircraft.
The $342.2 million figure is a contract ceiling rather than guaranteed StandardAero revenue. Work will be released against the vehicle during its ten-year life, meaning the eventual value will depend on maintenance demand and orders placed by the Air Force.
That distinction is important in a mature engine sustainment programme, where annual workload can vary according to fleet utilisation, engine condition, component availability, modification requirements, and the number of powerplants entering scheduled or unscheduled overhaul.
StandardAero has more than 50 years of experience across the T56 and commercial 501-D family and operates major overhaul capability in San Antonio, Winnipeg, and Fleetlands in the UK. The company states that more than 90% of its T56 repair capability is held in-house and that the network includes full engine test capability and extensive component remanufacturing.
Those facilities support a propulsion system that remains in service across several aircraft families despite its age. The T56 powers legacy C-130 variants as well as P-3 and related aircraft, while different series and configurations create separate maintenance, parts, test, and engineering requirements.
For the Air Force, depot capacity determines more than whether an engine can be stripped and rebuilt. An overhaul provider has to inspect rotating hardware and structures, determine which components can be repaired, manage life-limited parts, apply service bulletins and modifications, control configuration, reassemble modules, run the completed engine through an approved test process, and return an auditable maintenance record with the hardware.
Repair development becomes increasingly important as a fleet ages. Replacing every worn component with new material can be expensive or impossible where original production has reduced, so approved remanufacturing and restoration processes can return parts to service while reducing demand on the new-parts supply chain.
StandardAero’s T56 business has built a substantial catalogue of those repair processes. Keeping repair capability under one roof can reduce the number of external movements required during overhaul, although the depot remains dependent on specialist castings, forgings, bearings, seals, controls, accessories, and other material that cannot always be economically produced in-house.
A mature engine can therefore be held in the depot by a relatively modest item even when the major assemblies are serviceable. The practical measure of MRO capacity is the ability to synchronise engineering, labour, spares, component repair, test-cell availability, and documentation rather than simply the number of engines that can physically enter a facility.
The new contract also continues work on a fleet that has already undergone configuration upgrades. StandardAero previously converted USAF Series 3 T56 engines to the enhanced Series 3.5 standard, a modification intended to improve fuel efficiency and extend time on wing.
Supporting upgraded and legacy configurations simultaneously places additional pressure on configuration management. Parts eligibility, repair limits, technical publications, software or control standards, and test criteria have to remain linked to the correct engine configuration throughout overhaul.
The international C-130 population adds another layer. Foreign Military Sales customers may use different aircraft configurations, maintenance cycles, operating environments, and logistics arrangements, while depot work has to remain aligned with US government contracting and technical requirements.
StandardAero’s existing T56 customer base includes the US Air Force and Navy alongside the Canadian Forces, Royal Australian Air Force, Royal Netherlands Air Force, Swedish Defence Forces, and other military users. A common MRO network can spread specialist engineering knowledge across those fleets even where individual workscopes remain customer-specific.
The company also holds a long-term relationship with Rolls-Royce for T56 Series IV and related AE-family engines, giving its military propulsion business coverage beyond the particular Air Force IDIQ announced in August. That broader base matters because skilled engine technicians, test facilities, and component-repair processes represent long-lived industrial assets that are difficult to recreate quickly after workload disappears.
The latest Air Force award is therefore primarily a sustainment decision. It does not introduce a new engine or aircraft, but it keeps a specialised overhaul base available for a transport fleet expected to remain operational well beyond the original production life of many of its components.
Ten years is a long contracting horizon for a mature propulsion system, and actual demand will emerge through individual orders rather than the ceiling value. The more useful measures will be depot turnaround, engine availability, component repair rates, and whether the supply chain continues supporting T56 configurations as the global C-130 fleet ages.
