Five major Nordic defence and technology companies have joined the Defence Track within Nordic Compass, creating an industry-led forum intended to turn regional cooperation into defined defence initiatives. Ericsson, Kongsberg, Nokia, Patria, and Saab will act as founding drivers of the track, bringing telecommunications, defence platforms, sensors, software, and systems integration into the same programme.
The Defence Track is one of four areas being developed by Nordic Compass alongside capital markets, deep tech, and energy. The alliance was launched on 12 May and now includes 30 companies, foundations, and organisations in various partner roles. Its first set of industry-backed initiatives is due to be presented at the Nordic Compass Summit in Gothenburg on 4–5 November 2026.
No funded procurement programme, contract value, equipment order, or customer has yet been announced under the Defence Track. The November summit will therefore provide the first useful measure of how far the collaboration extends beyond coordination. Nordic Compass says experts will identify initiatives that can be scaled and implemented through regional cooperation, but those projects still have to acquire defined requirements, engineering responsibilities, budgets, and delivery routes before they become defence programmes.
The make-up of the founding group gives the track an unusually broad technical base. Ericsson and Nokia bring telecommunications and network technology, while Kongsberg, Patria, and Saab work across air defence, missiles, sensors, command systems, vehicles, aerospace, naval technology, communications, and other military equipment. That combination fits a defence market in which platforms increasingly depend on the digital links connecting sensors, command systems, autonomous vehicles, and effectors.
Ericsson president and chief executive Börje Ekholm said 5G is becoming part of the digital backbone of modern defence and pointed to trusted, scalable, and interoperable communications as the company’s contribution. Nokia Defence chairman Mikko Hautala similarly identified connectivity, artificial intelligence, and autonomous systems as areas where adoption has to move more quickly. Those statements describe the technical territory the companies expect to address, although Nordic Compass has not yet translated them into named projects.
Military use of commercial-derived communications technology creates a demanding integration problem. High bandwidth and distributed networking can allow more sensors and platforms to exchange data, but military systems also have to operate through interference, cyber attack, damaged infrastructure, and changing levels of connectivity. Equipment developed for civilian networks may therefore need additional security, resilience, spectrum management, encryption, ruggedisation, and interoperability work before it can support deployed forces.
Artificial intelligence and autonomy bring a similar gap between technology availability and operational deployment. Algorithms can assist sensor processing, route planning, target recognition, logistics, and command functions, but military use depends on assured data, secure computing, clear human-control arrangements, and extensive testing. The industrial task spans processors, radios, software, cyber protection, integration, and lifecycle support rather than residing in a single AI product.
Nordic cooperation could reduce duplication where national forces have overlapping requirements, particularly in communications, digital infrastructure, and autonomous systems. Common specifications can increase production volumes and make interoperability easier, while fragmented national requirements can force suppliers to maintain several closely related configurations. The advantage is not automatic, however: each country retains its own budgets, procurement authorities, security rules, export controls, and sovereign capability priorities.
The five founding companies are already large exporters, so any standards or architectures developed through the track could also have relevance beyond the Nordic market. Nordic Compass says the region collectively accounts for roughly 10% of NATO defence expenditure in Europe, placing significant purchasing power behind a comparatively small group of countries. That expenditure gives industry a stronger basis for joint development if governments choose to align requirements rather than simply discuss common challenges.
The initiative also reflects a wider shift in Nordic industrial policy, where resilience is being treated alongside competitiveness. The alliance’s four-track structure links defence with deep technology, capital markets, and energy rather than isolating military production from the rest of the industrial economy. For defence companies, that could create routes into technologies and financing models developed elsewhere, although the practical value will depend on the projects selected.
The Defence Track remains at an early stage. Ericsson, Kongsberg, Nokia, Patria, and Saab have committed considerable industrial weight to it, and the technical themes — connectivity, AI, autonomy, and regional resilience — align with current defence investment. By November, the more useful evidence will be whether those themes have become specific engineering programmes with participating customers, budgets, milestones, and a route into procurement or deployment.
