WiSPRevo joins Leopard 2A8 production programme

Intracom Defense will supply WiSPRevo communications systems for Leopard 2A8s. The contract covers newly manufactured tanks for international customers and an upgrade-ready architecture spanning crew communications, tactical radios, sensors, computing, and C4ISR.

Intracom Defense has been awarded a contract by KNDS Germany to supply its WiSPRevo communication and information system for newly manufactured Leopard 2A8 main battle tanks intended for international customers. The agreement places the Greek-developed architecture into the production configuration of one of Europe’s expanding armoured-vehicle programmes.

Intracom has not disclosed the contract value, vehicle quantity, or end customer. What is confirmed is that WiSPRevo will equip new-build Leopard 2A8 vehicles rather than being limited to a retrofit of an existing fleet, making long-term compatibility with later radios, sensors, and computing equipment an important part of the system’s role.

WiSPRevo combines crew intercommunication with a wider digital architecture for tactical communications and information exchange. Intracom highlights its Dynamic Noise Reduction technology, which is designed to maintain intelligible speech in the high-noise environment of an armoured vehicle while reducing crew exposure to damaging sound.

The acoustic problem inside a tracked vehicle is considerable. Engine, transmission, track, weapon, and ventilation noise compete with radio traffic and face-to-face communication, while simple hearing protection can reduce situational awareness if it blocks useful sound along with harmful noise. An integrated intercom has to suppress unwanted sound without masking operational information and continue functioning while the vehicle moves, fires, and operates external radios.

Intracom’s architecture extends beyond audio. WiSPRevo is designed to connect tactical radios, command-and-control applications, sensors, and computing systems, with provision for later changes to communications equipment and C4ISR capability. That upgrade path is increasingly important in a main battle tank whose electronic configuration can change several times during a service life even when the hull, powerpack, and main armament remain broadly stable.

The Leopard 2A8 programme gives the system access to a widening production base. KNDS has moved the A8 into serial production for several European customers, while additional national orders have increased demand for vehicles and subsystems. As production scales, electronic suppliers have to support integration into multiple customer configurations without allowing the underlying architecture to fragment unnecessarily.

National equipment choices make that difficult. Radios, encryption systems, battle-management software, and computing modules can vary between customers, and each army may apply its own security, command, and interoperability requirements. A communications architecture that isolates some of those changes from the rest of the vehicle can reduce the amount of rewiring, redesign, and requalification required when one element of the digital stack changes.

Distributed vehicle production adds another consideration. Leopard 2A8 manufacturing is no longer confined to a single production location, with national industrial participation expanding in several programmes. Common electronic subsystems must therefore be supplied, integrated, and tested against controlled specifications even when the surrounding vehicle work is carried out at different sites.

That makes interface control central to the programme. A nominally identical intercom or computing unit has to behave consistently across vehicles fitted with different radios, crew equipment, sensors, or national command systems. Manufacturing variation, software configuration, connector changes, and electromagnetic compatibility all have to be managed without turning every customer vehicle into a separate engineering project.

The contract also creates a long-term support obligation for Intracom. Once an electronic system becomes part of a production vehicle, the supplier has to sustain components, software, technical data, repair processes, and test capability over a service life measured in decades. Processors, connectors, and networking components may become obsolete far sooner than the armoured structure around them.

Planned technology refresh is therefore part of maintaining the vehicle rather than an optional enhancement. Software-defined functions can extend useful life, but hardware interfaces, environmental qualification, electromagnetic compatibility, and physical installation still determine how easily new equipment can be introduced.

For KNDS, the immediate challenge is delivering Leopard 2A8s at rising rates while controlling several national configurations. Intracom’s task is narrower but no less persistent: WiSPRevo has to remain a stable communications layer while the radios, sensors, applications, and computing equipment connected to it continue changing. Its first appearance in new-build 2A8 production will show how effectively that architecture can accommodate the upgrades already implicit in the platform’s long service life.
