Planet Labs PBC has signed a seven-figure, one-year agreement with an unnamed European defence and intelligence customer for Planet Mosaics and dedicated professional services. The award places a commercial Earth-observation supplier inside an operational-planning workflow rather than limiting the relationship to individual image purchases, although Planet has not identified the customer or disclosed a more precise contract value.
Under the agreement, Planet will provide its Mosaics product alongside specialist support intended to help the customer use geospatial data across critical areas of interest. Planet Mosaics combine imagery from multiple scenes into analysis-ready products covering wider geographic areas, allowing users to compare conditions over time without assembling every source image manually. The company says the customer will use the service across strategic land and maritime domains.
The distinction between imagery and a usable operational product matters. A defence organisation may have access to large volumes of commercial satellite data but still face work in defining areas of interest, handling changing image quality, integrating outputs into existing systems, and maintaining a repeatable process for detecting change. Planet’s professional-services business is designed to support those steps, including data customisation, delivery, integration, and workflow optimisation.
Planet’s own documentation describes mosaics as analysis-ready products built by selecting and compositing the best available scenes over a defined period. For a defence customer, that broad-area view can provide a baseline against which later changes are identified, with higher-resolution or other collection potentially directed towards locations that require closer inspection. The new contract does not disclose any mission-specific tasking, so the agreement should not be read as evidence of a particular intelligence operation.
Jon Powers, Vice President, Global Defense & Intelligence at Planet, said the award reflects “growing demand for our foundational geospatial data and expert support services”. That wording is significant because the professional-services element turns the contract into more than a data-access subscription. It makes delivery, integration, and user adoption part of the supplier’s responsibility.
Commercial Earth observation has become attractive to defence organisations partly because the data is unclassified and can often be shared more readily across agencies and partner organisations than material generated by classified national systems. Planet markets near-daily broad-area monitoring, an archive extending over many years, and analytic tools for change detection, vessel monitoring, and other intelligence tasks. Those capabilities do not replace sovereign intelligence systems, but they can add persistent coverage and a separate data layer that is easier to distribute.
The industrial model behind that service is more complex than the satellite constellation alone. Continuous monitoring depends on spacecraft production and launch, but also on ground stations, cloud processing, storage, software, network delivery, and customer support. A contract based on recurring geospatial products therefore places pressure on the entire chain: imagery has to be collected, processed consistently, and delivered quickly enough to remain useful for planning.
That also changes how capability is procured. Buying a satellite gives a government control over a physical asset but requires years of development, launch, and support. Buying a commercial data service allows capacity to be added faster and adjusted through shorter contracts, although the customer remains dependent on the provider’s infrastructure and commercial continuity. A one-year agreement such as Planet’s new European award is therefore relatively flexible, but it also requires the customer to decide later whether the service has become important enough to renew or expand.
Planet has been building a broader defence and intelligence portfolio around this model. The company has announced work with the Swedish Armed Forces, the US National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, and the US Defense Innovation Unit, among other public-sector customers. Those agreements are not directly comparable in scope, but they show that commercial imagery suppliers are increasingly being asked to provide sustained information services rather than occasional collections.
For Planet, the challenge is to make high collection cadence translate into dependable operational use. Large image volumes can create as much burden as value if users cannot identify what has changed or move the result into established intelligence and planning systems. Mosaics and professional services are intended to reduce that friction by providing a more stable geospatial layer and support for integration.
The European customer remains unnamed, which limits any assessment of how deeply the service will be embedded in national operations. What is clear is that the contract combines data, processing, and specialist support in a single one-year package. Its significance will be measured less by the seven-figure value than by whether commercial broad-area monitoring becomes a routine planning input that the customer chooses to retain beyond the initial term.
