Sweden has authorised the procurement of the M142 HIMARS rocket-artillery system at a cost of around SEK7 billion, adding a new long-range fires capability while pairing the acquisition with Swedish-Finnish cooperation on training, maintenance, production, and ammunition security.
The system is manufactured by Lockheed Martin, with first deliveries scheduled for 2027. The acquisition will be funded through the Swedish Armed Forces’ regular investment plan and the government’s opportunity-purchase framework under the 2025–2030 Total Defence Bill.
Sweden has not disclosed the number of launchers or the complete ammunition package covered by the approval. The SEK7 billion figure therefore establishes the broad scale of the programme without allowing a reliable calculation of individual system cost or stock depth.
HIMARS will give the Swedish Army a wheeled rocket-artillery capability able to use ammunition common with other NATO operators. It complements rather than replaces Sweden’s tube artillery, including the Archer systems that are being expanded for divisional fire support.
That distinction affects almost every part of the support chain. Long-range rocket artillery requires specialist guided munitions, launcher maintenance, fire-control integration, target data, communications, and storage infrastructure that differ substantially from conventional 155mm ammunition and howitzer support.
The Swedish Government has tied the procurement directly to cooperation with Finland. Defence ministers Pål Jonson and Antti Häkkänen have signed a joint declaration covering training, education, capability development, maintenance, security of supply, and cooperation on production.
Finland already operates the M270 Multiple Launch Rocket System, which uses many of the same munitions and components as HIMARS. That commonality gives the neighbouring countries a practical basis for shared training and support without requiring either to operate an identical launcher fleet.
Maintenance cooperation could reduce duplication in specialist facilities, tooling, and technical expertise, while common ammunition families create scope for coordinated stockholding and replenishment. Those arrangements become more valuable as European demand for rocket artillery increases and several countries compete for capacity from the same production base.
Ammunition security is therefore prominent in the Swedish announcement. Launchers can be delivered comparatively quickly once production slots are available, but their operational value depends on the number and type of rockets and missiles that can be bought, stored, and replenished over time.
Lockheed Martin and Saab are also signing a separate declaration covering potential integration of Saab’s Ground-Launched Small Diameter Bomb and cooperation on production of munitions for HIMARS and other systems, including Patriot. The Swedish Government presents that work as part of efforts to improve security of ammunition supply.
GLSDB combines a ground-launched rocket motor with the Small Diameter Bomb and was developed by Saab and Boeing. Saab has previously promoted the weapon for use from HIMARS, M270, and Chunmoo-type launchers, giving Sweden a potential path to introduce an ammunition with domestic industrial participation into its future rocket-artillery force.
The integration has not yet been announced as a contracted Swedish weapon programme. The current declaration establishes an area for cooperation rather than confirming a completed qualification or ammunition order, and the distinction is important while the final Swedish HIMARS configuration remains undisclosed.
Production cooperation may prove more consequential than any individual ammunition option. European defence procurement has repeatedly shown that equipment commonality does not guarantee ammunition availability when several operators increase orders simultaneously. Rocket motors, energetic materials, guidance electronics, warheads, and final assembly can each limit output.
Sweden has already been investing in broader ammunition capacity and is now adding another high-demand munition family to its requirements. Working with Finland offers a route to coordinate that demand while sharing parts of the support and training burden.
The acquisition also gives Sweden greater compatibility with allied long-range fires units operating in northern Europe. Common ammunition, communications, and operating procedures can make cross-border reinforcement easier, particularly where Swedish and Finnish formations would be expected to operate within the same regional defence plans.
First deliveries in 2027 create a relatively short route from procurement approval to fielded equipment. Building the less visible parts of the capability — trained crews, maintenance capacity, ammunition stocks, targeting networks, and replenishment arrangements — will continue after the first launcher arrives.
Sweden is therefore treating HIMARS as more than a vehicle purchase. The parallel Finnish and industrial agreements recognise that long-range fires depend on a production and support ecosystem, and that an empty launcher or one waiting for specialist maintenance has considerably less strategic value than its procurement announcement suggests.
