Army orders up to 12 UH-72B Lakotas

Airbus will supply up to twelve additional UH-72B Lakota helicopters. The $115.4m award extends a US-built light-utility fleet used for National Guard and Army missions.

Airbus Helicopters has received a $115.4m US Army contract covering up to 12 additional UH-72B Lakota light utility helicopters, extending procurement of the commercial-derived aircraft through the end of the decade.

The firm-fixed-price contract covers the helicopters together with jettisonable cockpit doors, installation of air-conditioning systems, engine inlet barrier filters, and programme management. The value of the action is $115.4m, taking the cumulative face value to $140.7m, with completion scheduled for 31 December 2030.

The Army obligated fiscal 2024 and 2025 aircraft-procurement funding at award. The contract notice identifies work at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama, while Airbus manufactures and delivers Lakota aircraft from its Columbus, Mississippi, helicopter facility.

UH-72B is the latest production version of an aircraft family derived from Airbus’s commercial H145. The Army has used that commercial lineage to introduce capability improvements without launching a separate clean-sheet development programme for every upgrade, preserving a procurement model that has been central to Lakota since the original light utility helicopter selection.

The B-model replaced the earlier four-bladed rotor arrangement with a five-bladed main rotor and added a Fenestron shrouded tail rotor. It also uses Safran Arriel 2E engines with dual full-authority digital engine control and the Helionix avionics suite, including a four-axis autopilot.

Airbus delivered the first UH-72B in September 2021. The aircraft draws its changes from development of the commercial H145, allowing the military fleet to benefit from engineering work spread across a much larger civil programme rather than carrying the full cost of developing the improvements for the Army alone.

That approach suits a helicopter whose principal US roles do not demand the armour, weapons, and survivability equipment fitted to a frontline attack or assault platform. Lakota missions span training, homeland security, disaster response, search and rescue, reconnaissance, medical evacuation, drug interdiction, command and control, and other utility work.

Airbus says more than 480 Lakotas are in service across Army, National Guard, and US Navy operations, making the family the Army’s third-largest rotorcraft fleet. Aircraft operate across 49 states and territories, creating a geographically dispersed support requirement in which availability, parts commonality, maintenance effort, and operating cost matter as much as peak tactical performance.

The latest contract also specifies several practical modifications rather than a new mission system. Engine inlet barrier filters address operation in dusty or debris-heavy environments, while air conditioning and jettisonable cockpit doors alter the baseline aircraft around crew, environmental, and operational requirements.

Such changes appear modest beside a new sensor or weapon, but they can determine how reliably a utility aircraft performs across a wide range of climates and missions. They also have to be integrated without undermining the commercial advantages of the platform by creating a heavily bespoke military configuration that becomes expensive to support.

Configuration management is already an issue across the Lakota fleet because UH-72A and UH-72B aircraft use different rotor, engine, avionics, and flight-control arrangements. Common lineage reduces the gap between them, but maintainers still need the correct technical data, parts, test equipment, and training for each version.

Follow-on procurement extends the period during which both configurations will operate together. That is not unusual for a mature aircraft fleet, although the cost advantage of incremental upgrades depends partly on preventing the support system from becoming fragmented by too many small configuration differences.

Manufacturing at Columbus gives the programme a domestic industrial base despite its European commercial origins. Airbus says approximately 250 people work on Lakota production there, combining a US assembly and support operation with H145 engineering developments generated through the wider Airbus helicopter business.

The resulting model sits somewhere between a conventional military aircraft programme and a commercial fleet purchase. The Army receives an aircraft built to military requirements and supported through a dedicated US industrial operation, but much of the underlying product development remains tied to a civil helicopter produced for a broader global market.

Buying up to 12 more aircraft does not materially change the scale of a fleet already approaching 500 helicopters. It does, however, keep the UH-72B production and support chain active into 2030 while replacing or supplementing older aircraft with the current configuration. The industrial question is whether that incremental path can continue delivering useful improvements without allowing configuration complexity to erode the simplicity that made the commercial-derived acquisition model attractive in the first place.
