France selects THUNDART for sovereign land strike

France has selected THUNDART for sovereign long-range precision land strike. MBDA and Safran will establish a joint venture covering development, production, support, and future evolution towards operational autonomy in 2030.

MBDA and Safran Electronics & Defense have been selected by France’s Direction générale de l’armement to provide THUNDART as the successor to the French Army’s Lance-Roquettes Unitaire ground-launched deep-strike capability.

The notification moves THUNDART beyond the exclusive-negotiation phase announced in June and into a defined development and industrial programme. The French-designed system is intended to provide precision engagement at ranges up to 150km, compared with around 80km for the existing LRU capability, with operational autonomy targeted for 2030.

An initial development phase has already produced a successful demonstration firing in April 2026. MBDA and Safran will now establish a 50/50 joint venture in the Paris region to manage the programme’s development, production, in-service support, future evolution, and potential adaptation for allied customers.

The industrial structure combines MBDA’s complex-weapons engineering with Safran’s navigation and guidance capabilities. THUNDART is designed to operate in heavily contested environments, including conditions where satellite navigation is denied or jammed, placing resilient navigation and guidance alongside range and warhead effect as central parts of the system design.

Demonstrator moves towards a production weapon

The programme must now convert a successful firing into a repeatable military product. Launch equipment, mission planning, propulsion, guidance, navigation, warhead integration, safety systems, vehicle interfaces, communications, software, test equipment, and support arrangements all need to converge around a controlled configuration that can be manufactured and maintained at scale.

MBDA lists THUNDART with a 150km range, high-supersonic speed, metric precision, and shoot-and-scoot launcher operation. The company also says the weapon uses proven subassemblies already in service with European armed forces, an approach intended to shorten development by avoiding unnecessary redesign of mature elements.

Extending tactical strike from roughly 80km to 150km also places greater demands on the wider targeting chain. Command systems need sufficiently accurate and timely target data at the new range, while communications, mission planning, and weapon navigation have to retain that accuracy through launch and flight.

Safran’s navigation work addresses one of the most difficult parts of that chain. Inertial navigation can maintain an independent position estimate when GNSS signals are disrupted, although final weapon accuracy still depends on the complete guidance architecture, calibration, targeting data, and performance of the integrated system.

MBDA brings the programme experience needed to qualify the finished weapon rather than individual subsystems. Production rounds will have to demonstrate consistent performance after manufacture, transport, storage, environmental exposure, and routine Army handling, while launchers and support equipment need sufficient reliability for sustained operational use.

The joint venture gives the two companies a single organisation responsible for more than development. Production, support, upgrades, supplier changes, obsolescence management, and potential export variants will sit within the same structure, reducing the need to rebuild programme governance around each stage of the weapon’s service life.

The arrangement also establishes a French-controlled industrial route for a capability that European armies are rebuilding after years of comparatively limited investment in long-range fires. THUNDART occupies the tactical deep-strike tier rather than attempting to replace longer-range cruise missiles or air-launched weapons, leaving France with several different options according to range, target type, launch platform, and mission cost.

Several dozen engineers are already involved across the programme, with work distributed through multiple French regions. Missile production reaches well beyond the two prime companies into electronics, machining, structures, propulsion, energetics, materials, test equipment, software, and specialist suppliers, making production readiness dependent on the depth of that wider chain.

The 2030 objective leaves a relatively compressed period for detailed development, qualification, industrialisation, launcher integration, Army trials, and manufacturing ramp-up. Reusing mature technologies can reduce technical risk, but programme schedule will increasingly depend on test capacity, component availability, supplier readiness, and the speed at which design changes can be closed.

France is also retaining national control over future use and development. Sovereignty in a weapon programme extends beyond the location of final assembly to software, guidance technology, support data, production capacity, configuration authority, and the ability to approve later changes without dependence on a foreign prime contractor.

The April firing demonstrated that the core concept could be made to work. The DGA notification now puts a more difficult measure in front of MBDA and Safran: converting that demonstrator into qualified launchers and ammunition that can be manufactured consistently and introduced into Army service on the 2030 timetable.
