Hanwha sets Chunmoo operator club for 2027

Hanwha will launch the Chunmoo User Club internationally in 2027. The operator-led forum will connect South Korea, Poland, Estonia, Norway, and other partners around training, sustainment, ammunition, logistics, and future system development.

Hanwha Aerospace plans to launch a formal Chunmoo User Club in 2027, creating an international operator forum around its multiple launch rocket system as adoption expands across NATO members. The first official meeting is planned for the Republic of Korea, with subsequent events expected to rotate between participating countries.

The plan emerged from a Chunmoo User Workshop held alongside the fifth K9 User Club in Tartu, Estonia. Around 40 military and industry representatives attended from Chunmoo user nations including South Korea, Poland, Estonia, and Norway, together with representatives from other NATO countries. The workshop was intended to establish the framework for a permanent operator community rather than announce another launcher procurement.

Hanwha expects the forum to cover operational experience, training, maintenance, logistics, ammunition, and future capability development. Those areas become harder to manage as a weapon system spreads across several armed forces, because operators accumulate different experience of climate, doctrine, transport, storage, training cycles, and sustainment.

A structured user community gives those lessons somewhere to be compared before each country develops its own isolated answer. It can also reveal recurring maintenance or configuration issues across several fleets, allowing common engineering work to be considered where appropriate while national forces retain control over their own requirements.

The forum is intended to create a closer feedback route between operators and Hanwha. Evidence gathered during exercises, maintenance, training, and routine operation can feed into sustainment packages, upgrade priorities, and future system development. A common request from several users carries a different engineering case from a single national modification and can justify a shared response.

Senior Executive Vice President Dong Seok Yoo, Head of PGM Business Division at Hanwha Aerospace, said: “The Chunmoo User Club will create a forum where users can share real-world experience, learn from one another and identify common requirements. By bringing that experience together, we can strengthen readiness today while shaping how Chunmoo evolves for the future.”

The proposal arrives as Chunmoo’s European footprint expands. Poland has built its Homar-K programme around the architecture and is developing local missile-production capacity through cooperation with Hanwha and domestic industry. Estonia has ordered Chunmoo systems and associated ammunition, while Norway has also selected the system with integrated logistics support.

Those fleets will not be identical. Chunmoo’s modular launcher architecture can employ several guided weapons, while national customers integrate different communications, fire-control, logistics, ammunition, and support arrangements. Common hardware therefore does not automatically create common operating procedures or an interchangeable support structure.

The user-club model offers a route to manage some of that divergence. Operators can compare failure data, spares demand, maintenance intervals, ammunition handling, training methods, and support experience without creating a formal multinational procurement authority. Where several fleets encounter the same issue, Hanwha gains a stronger evidence base for engineering changes and support planning.

Configuration management will become increasingly important as the international fleet grows. Modular systems are attractive because launchers, weapons, communications equipment, and local subsystems can be tailored to national needs, but each modification creates another configuration that has to be documented, tested, maintained, and supported through life.

The industrial dimension extends beyond Hanwha’s own production. Poland’s programme already includes extensive local participation, while agreements with other European customers have brought technology-transfer, maintenance, testing, and industrial-cooperation commitments. A user forum could provide another channel for national suppliers to identify compatible interfaces, common support requirements, or technologies that could be integrated across more than one fleet.

Hanwha is drawing directly on its experience with the K9 User Club, which has developed alongside the international fleet of K9 self-propelled howitzers. The Tartu event showed how a common platform can become the basis for discussions that move beyond delivery and into sustainment, upgrades, industrial capacity, and long-term fleet availability.

The Chunmoo forum will face the same test once it becomes formal in 2027. Its value will depend on whether operator discussions reach maintenance evidence, ammunition experience, interface requirements, and upgrade priorities rather than remaining at presentation level. The growing number of national configurations gives the proposed club plenty to discuss; the practical result will be measured in whether those discussions reduce support friction and influence the next rounds of system development.
