The Portuguese Air Force has contracted Tekever for AR5 long-endurance uncrewed aircraft and supporting mission systems, adding a military home-market customer for the Portuguese-developed platform. The procurement includes a ground control station, Tekever’s ATLAS mission system, and operator training. An initial training phase is intended to accompany delivery and initial operational capability, while further instruction is planned in October. The package therefore covers the wider operating system needed to employ the aircraft rather than treating the air vehicles as stand-alone equipment.
Portugal plans to use the AR5 for maritime surveillance, security, and defence, including monitoring of its Exclusive Economic Zone. The Air Force also expects the system to support public-interest missions, giving the aircraft a role across defence, coastal security, environmental monitoring, and other government tasks where persistent airborne sensing is useful.
That mission set suits the basic characteristics of a long-endurance uncrewed aircraft. Tekever states endurance of up to 20 hours and payload capacity of up to 50kg, with satellite communications supporting operation beyond conventional radio line of sight. The aircraft is also designed to use short or unprepared runways, reducing dependence on a small number of major air bases.
Those features matter particularly for maritime surveillance. Monitoring a large sea area requires an aircraft to remain on task long enough to search, identify, and revisit contacts without consuming most of its endurance simply reaching the patrol zone. Beyond-line-of-sight communications are equally important because the useful operating area can rapidly extend beyond the range of terrestrial control links.
The payload is only one part of that chain. Maritime surveillance aircraft generate tracks, imagery, position data, and other sensor information that has to be processed and passed to operators or command organisations able to act on it. Tekever’s ATLAS software therefore sits alongside the airframe and ground station as a central component of the procurement, managing mission information rather than leaving the aircraft as an isolated sensor.
The contract also gives Portugal a domestic industrial dimension. Tekever develops and produces autonomous systems in Portugal while expanding manufacturing elsewhere in Europe. A home-market military operator can provide a different type of feedback from export or contractor-operated customers because national crews become responsible for training, maintenance, mission planning, and routine operation over a longer period.
The AR5 is not new to European defence and security work. Tekever has used the platform across maritime and border-surveillance activity and has expanded its UK industrial footprint around the aircraft. The UK has also selected the AR5 family under Project Corvus, giving the platform exposure to a larger military surveillance programme outside Portugal.
Portugal’s own procurement is nevertheless distinct because it creates a defined Air Force-operated capability with a near-term delivery schedule. It also follows separate Portuguese use of Tekever technology for maritime-authority work, broadening the national operating base for uncrewed surveillance rather than concentrating the technology inside one service or agency.
Bringing the aircraft into service from September will require more than delivery of airframes and consoles. Crews need approved operating procedures, training, maintenance support, airspace coordination, communications infrastructure, and access to the organisations that will use the surveillance data. Integrating those functions is often what determines whether a nominal initial operating capability becomes a routinely usable service.
No aircraft quantity or contract value has been disclosed in Tekever’s announcement, limiting assessment of the production impact. The industrial significance lies instead in a firm military customer, a complete operating package, direct Air Force use, and a timetable that moves the programme towards service within weeks rather than years.
The contract also provides another test of whether European autonomous-aircraft manufacturers can convert rapid product development into sustained military support. Building the aircraft is only the opening step; maintaining mission software, sensors, communications, spares, trained operators, and configuration control over an operational fleet creates a different and potentially longer-lived industrial workload.
Portugal will begin finding that out from September. The AR5 already brings the endurance and communications characteristics required for persistent surveillance; the more important measure will be how effectively the Air Force turns those aircraft into a dependable maritime information service across the country’s extensive operating area.
