Saab reveals A3-001 uncrewed combat concept

Saab has revealed its A3-001 uncrewed combat aircraft concept publicly. The full-scale model points towards a low-observable autonomous platform for electronic warfare, air-defence suppression, precision strike, and future crewed-uncrewed teaming.

Saab has publicly revealed A3-001, a full-scale concept for a future uncrewed combat aircraft intended to explore how autonomous platforms could operate alongside Gripen and later crewed combat-air systems.

The model was displayed at the Swedish Armed Forces Jubilee Air Show at Malmen Air Base in Linköping on 22 August. Saab describes the aircraft as a low-observable, highly autonomous platform intended for missions including electronic warfare, suppression of enemy air defences, and precision strike in contested environments.

A3-001 is not a production aircraft, and Sweden has not committed to procure it. The concept sits within a wider Swedish future-fighter study programme examining crewed and uncrewed solutions, technology development, and demonstrators intended to inform later decisions about combat-air capability.

Saab plans to fly uncrewed demonstrators with fighter-like characteristics before 2030. A3-001 provides a visible indication of the type of aircraft that could emerge from that work in the following decade, but the programme remains several stages away from a defined acquisition requirement.

The work builds on contracts placed by the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration, FMV. Saab received an initial future-fighter concept-study order in 2024 covering crewed and uncrewed solutions, technology development, and demonstrations, followed by an extension worth about SEK2.6 billion in October 2025 covering work from 2025 to 2027.

Those studies involve Saab, FMV, the Swedish Armed Forces, the Swedish Defence Research Agency, GKN Aerospace, and other industrial participants. The effort is framed around a system-of-systems approach rather than a direct replacement-aircraft competition, allowing Sweden to examine how new platforms, sensors, weapons, communications, and autonomous functions could operate with existing capabilities.

That distinction matters because an uncrewed combat aircraft derives much of its value from the network around it. Low observability and weapons carriage determine which missions an air vehicle can attempt, but mission systems, datalinks, sensor fusion, autonomy software, electronic warfare, and command arrangements determine whether it becomes a useful part of a wider force.

Saab has linked future combat-air work to experience accumulated through Gripen E and GlobalEye. Gripen provides an existing software-intensive combat-air architecture with sensors, electronic warfare, datalinks, and mission systems, while GlobalEye adds airborne surveillance and command-and-control experience across several domains. Neither programme fixes the eventual A3 configuration, but both provide engineering foundations that can be reused during demonstrator work.

The manufacturing method is also part of the experiment. Saab has been developing what it calls software-defined manufacturing, using robotics, additive manufacturing, and less design-specific tooling to shorten the time required to alter prototypes and production configurations.

That approach could matter particularly for an uncrewed aircraft family. If autonomy, sensors, payloads, and mission requirements evolve faster than a conventional fighter procurement cycle, the production system needs to absorb configuration changes without turning every revision into a costly industrial restart.

The difficult part will be carrying that flexibility from prototypes into controlled production. Repeatability, structural qualification, materials traceability, certification, and maintainability still apply even when tooling becomes more adaptable, and a production aircraft has to be supported for years rather than changed whenever a better prototype configuration appears.

A3-001 also illustrates how Sweden is keeping several combat-air options open. Saab continues to develop and sell Gripen while future-fighter studies examine capabilities that could complement existing aircraft before any later decision on a new crewed platform. An uncrewed aircraft capable of taking on higher-risk tasks could therefore become part of a mixed force rather than simply replace a current fighter.

Saab has not disclosed dimensions, propulsion details, weapons capacity, sensor configuration, unit-cost targets, or production assumptions for A3-001. Those omissions separate an air-show model from an engineering definition that could be costed, qualified, and procured.

The nearer milestones are therefore demonstrator development and flight testing. Before Saab reaches its pre-2030 flight target, the programme will have to address aerodynamic validation, propulsion integration, flight controls, autonomous mission behaviour, low-observable engineering, ground test, and safe interaction with crewed aircraft.

A3-001 has given the Swedish studies a recognisable airframe, but the model is the uncomplicated part. The more useful measure will be whether Saab can convert the autonomy, systems engineering, manufacturing, and flight-control work behind it into a credible flying demonstrator before the decade closes.
